Weight Loss People doing PALEO Feb 07 2013

Should we tell Raiken that he's only the latest in an endless line of paleo/lowcarb/primal/vegan/raw/glutenfree/Fad DietDuJour gnostics to come through CC?

Stick around, man. Listen to what people who've been in the trenches for YEARS have to say. Learn. No one here has a financial investment in making you believe their diet is the magic perfect human diet. The websites you keep posting are SELLING DIET BOOKS. Think critically. You'll be far more successful at weight loss and maintenance if you can do that.

Foods Wheat and Grains Controversy... Feb 02 2013
23:29 (UTC)

There is no GMO wheat in the global food supply. If your sources have led you to believe that there is, you should consider that maybe the OTHER things your sources have led you to believe may be just as inaccurate.

The easiest way to avoid GMOs is to buy organic.

Hmmmm....I eat all grains and have high HDL, low triglycerides, low blood pressure and normal weight. I had problems with all four in the past, but since I started calorie counting (less eating - more activity) I've become much more healthy.

Me too. Eat the proper amount of food and get regular exercise. There's your magic pill.

Yes I have just read marks daily apple forums. I like to have carbs between 50-100. Yesterday I felt so low that I ate pumpkin with lashings of tahini. Just so fatigued. I miss bananas and berries. I want to suck it up and get to the point where I enjoy paleo. Breakfast is 2 eggs and spinach Snack is 2 pieces lindt dark chok Lunch is salad Tuna avo oil Snack is celery and tahini butter. Dinner is vegetables salad and meat or curry no rice. Is 100g carbs to high coupled with my fat intake? I want this to work so I feel better and have less bloating. Your advice would be awesome. Ps Do you have a cheat meal?

In one post you say you love low carb, and in the next you say you feel 'so low' and miss bananas and berries. Just worth noting the dissonance.

Most apps give unrealistically low calorie targets. If you're always tired, that's an indication you may not be eating enough. You don't have to starve to lose weight, you just have to burn slightly more calories than you consume. Most relatively active adults burn 2000+ calories a day just through regular life activities (that's even without exercise), so you can probably eat quite a bit more and still lose, and you'll feel better to boot.

I lost 80 pounds five years ago and have kept it off. Jimmy Moore has been on his low carb diet since 2004 and is still obese. He's done the ketosis thing before, BTW, and lost weight, and regained it.

That is all the proof I need.

I'm VERY familiar with Jimmy Moore, and Taubes, and Kruse, thanks.

I may not know everything, but I know how to spot a shyster, and I know how to lose weight and keep it off. Eating only fat is NOT HEALTHY. You have been SNOWED if you actually believe it is. Now, I know you're going to twist my words and say that I'm saying eating fat isn't healthy, and I've said nothing of the sort. Fat is healthy. So are protein and carbs. Eating only one macronutrient is DUMB.

Start small, with short walks and work up over time. Jumping in to an hour a day right off the bat is a recipe for disaster. Make sure that you're eating enough, as well, I see client after client dealing with chronic fatigue and 99% of the time the cause is that they are, very simply, starving. Eat enough calories to support your activity, and carbs are fine.

Also, ketosis is the dumbest thing ever. Listen to Melkor and urbanantonio, they are legit, educated and experienced with weight loss and exercise.

I'd definitely let your doctor know about the vomiting and back pain, that sounds like it could be more serious than simple poor nutrition.

People your age are notoriously able to get away with eating crap with little to no negative consequences. So, in this case, I'd err on the side of caution and work with your doctor to make sure there's not something more serious going on.

In the last 2 months, people have told me I'm both too fat and too lean. Lots of people on both sides.

It doesn't matter. I am what I am, and I'm perfectly happy with it. I'm not 'too' anything, except maybe too awesome.

You're beautiful!

Original Post by smashley23: IF doesn't magically make people have disordered eating problems just like squats don't magically ruin perfectly good knees.

I have no experience with people who didn't do well with IF, so I am a little skeptical as to how common it becomes a problem, particularly with people who don't have pre-existing eating problems and take the time to actually plan instead of just not eating.

Actually, there's plenty of scientific evidence that highly restrictive diets (and I consider fasting of any sort highly restrictive) can trigger eating disorders in people who are genetically predisposed.

I do this thing where if I'm not going to be able to eat for several hours, I eat a lot to get me through to my next meal. I call it 'eating enough to get me through to the next meal', but maybe I should give it a fancy name and find some outlying scientific studies and make up an elaborate web of logical fallacy to support my claim that 'eating enough to get me through to the next meal' is actually a revolutionary new weight loss technique. I could make a million dollars.

Before I started fasting, I was so fat my hormone levels were messed up and I was pre-diabetic. Now, I'm 65lbs lighter, my hormone levels are healthy, my insulin sensitivity increased, my blood pressure is down, cholesterol levels down. My hair is healthier. I love it.

I've had almost identical results (I lost more weight though) and I didn't fast to do it, I just ate the proper amount of food and exercised regularly.Which is what you've done. It seems to me that eating the proper amount of food and exercising is the common denominator here. Not fasting.

I see way too many women clients who've messed up their endocrine system and triggered disordered eating behaviors after experimenting with fasting. Not everyone has a bad experience, but it's common enough that I discourage my clients and friends from trying it.

You've lost 10 pounds in less than a month, the weight is coming off. The 20/30 pound loss is weird and I'd guess more likely scale error than reality.

But 10 pounds in less than a month is excellent progress.

I lost 80 pounds eating 2500-2800 a day, and maintain that loss (going on 4 years of maintenance now) on 2800-3500 a day. Plus I'm 40. Starving yourself is NOT the answer!
