Is it possible to slow down a very, very fast metabolism?

I have have an abnormally large appetite and have had since I was a kid. My mom discussed it with our doctor many times when I was growing up and I talked to a doctor about it in college. No one ever found a real cause for it but I was given many tests. I am 26 years old , 6'3", 220 pounds, and I am not gaining or losing weight. I eat about 5000 cal/day these days. I was very athletic in high school and college and back then I would eat as much as 8000 cals/day. I actually find this to be kind of a problem. In college I got a little self conscious about it. Once at a 3 day church retreat I was so hungry at each meal that my appetite was a main topic of conversation. Despite this I was still hungry by 3 or 4 AM. When breakfast came around at 8:00 my stomach was cramping almost painfully and I just made even more of a pig out of myself. It made my feel abnormal. I want to know if there is anything I can do to slow down my metabolism. I also I am interested if you know any other people with this kind of problem.


I am unaware of a way to slow down metabolism, although you may be able to reduce activity to burn fewer calories. I have to believe your doctors when they say you are fine. There is also a difference between ‘appetite’, the desire for food, and ‘hunger’, a physical sensation, and so be sure to tell the difference, but a male of  26 and 6’3” needs about 2,700 calories a day, which is a lot of food.  In between meals, you might want to eat more calorie-dense foods, like nuts, raisins and trail mix, to quiet your hunger in a discrete way.  At meals, choose high protein foods, like lean meat, eggs and fish, and high fat foods such as oils and mayonnaise because they maintain satiety longer. Also, according to the BMI charts, your healthy weight is around 195 pounds and so you might be eating too much.  To talk with "other people with this kind of problem" please post your question in the Forums.
