A quick, simple recipe for biscuits that's easy to double and experiment with!

Recipe Ingredients for Plain Tea Biscuits

2 cups all-purpose flour
2 tbsp granulated sugar
1 tsp salt
4 tbsp baking powder
1/2 cup vegetable shortening
2/3 cup skim milk

Recipe Directions for Plain Tea Biscuits

  1. Preheat oven to 450F.

  2. Put dry ingredients into a large bowl; make sure they're mixed thoroughly.

  3. Cut in shortening until dough is crumbly. Create a well for the liquid(s).

  4. Pour milk into the well; push sides of dough into the liquid and then push into the dough until it becomes soft.

  5. Flour hands & a stable working surface; turn dough onto surface and knead gently 8-10 times. Roll or pat dough into 1/2" or 1" thickness & cut using a small cookie cutter or floured rim of a drinking glass.

  6. Arrange biscuits on a greased cookie sheet: close together for soft sides and farther

  7. apart for crisp sides. Bake in oven for 12-15min and let stand for a minute before transferring to a cooling rack. **Brushing biscuits with milk prior to baking produces a golden brown top.**
