Pita bread is a staple of Arab and Middle Eastern cuisine. This recipe is for individual sized pitas. Eat it with hummus, tabbouleh, baba ganoush, or tahini sauce as an appetizer, or dip it in stews and soups.

Recipe Ingredients for Pita Bread

3 cup Wheat Flour, White, All-purpose, Enriched, Bleached
0.5 tsp Salt, Table
2 oz Yeast
1.75 cup (8 fl oz) Water
3 tbsp Olive Oil

Recipe Directions for Pita Bread

  1. Combine the yeast, sugar, and 1/2 cup of lukewarm water in a small bowl. Let the mixture sit for 10-15 minutes.

  2. Measure 3 cups of flour, two tablespoons of olive oil and half a teaspoon of salt into a large bowl.

  3. Add the yeast mixture to the flour, stirring slowly. Also add the other 1.5 cups of lukewarm water.

  4. Once all the flour is encorporated, knead the dough until it can be rolled into a non-sticky ball.

  5. Coat the ball of dough in about one tablespoon of olive oil. Put it in a clean bowl (you can use the same bowl you used for mixing, but wash it out and dry it well). Let the dough sit in a warm place for 2.5-3 hours, until it doubles in size.

  6. Take the dough out of the bowl and separate it into ten small balls. Place them on a plate or cloth and leave them covered for another 10 minutes.

  7. Preheat your oven to 500 degrees Fahrenheit. Roll out each ball until it is 1/2 an inch thick. Cover them again for another 10 minutes.

  8. You can place the pitas directly on the rack, or you can use an ungreased cookie sheet. Cook them in the middle of the oven for 5-7 minutes, until some brown spots appear on the dough. They will balloon up in the oven, but don't pop them. When you take them out to cool, they will deflate and have a nice pocket inside of them.
