Made with seitan, it is very close to the real thing! A great sandwich and very filling. Seitan is not part of the analysis, due to using homemade in my version, though prepackaged will work.

Recipe Ingredients for Philly Cheese "Steak" Sandwiches

2 tsp extra virgin olive oil
1 cup frozen peppers
1/2 cup frozen onions
1/4 medium onion
2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
1 tsp black pepper
1 tsp hot sauce
1/2 tsp lemon juice
1/4 tsp cumin
1/4 tsp poultry seasoning
4 tsp light mayo
4 rolls Kaiser
4 servings (1 1/3 cup) shredded part skim mozzarella cheese
1 cup raw mushrooms
4 leaves fresh basil

Recipe Directions for Philly Cheese "Steak" Sandwiches

  1. Preheat broiler or oven on broil setting to 200-250 degrees F.

  2. Place oil in large pan over medium high heat.

  3. Loosely chop mushrooms and finely chop onions; add to pan and cook, stirring occasionally.

  4. When still semi-firm, add frozen veggies and seitan.

  5. When mostly cooked through and seitan is starting to brown, turn heat down to medium.

  6. Add worcestershire, pepper, hot sauce, lemon juice, cumin, and poultry seasoning, mixing well. Continue cooking, stirring occasionally.

  7. Meanwhile, slice rolls as you would a hamburger bun and place open faced in broiler or oven. (You can also put a very little light butter spread on top as well).

  8. After 5 minutes, remove rolls. Place bottom bun on baking sheet.

  9. Place some of the "meat" mixture on the bun and cover with cheese. Be careful not to waste by dropping it on cookie sheet; it is not important to get all of it on the bun during this stage. Keep seitan mixture on low heat to warm.

  10. Place in oven for about 3 minutes or until cheese melts. During which, place light mayo and fresh basil leaves on top bun.

  11. Before serving, add more "meat" mixture and cheese if necessary to evenly place on all four sandiches.
