Most of the good stuff in a Philly cheese steak, from thin-sliced steak to onions and peppers is still here, be we opt for slightly-less-gooey, more flavorful provolone cheese in place of Cheese Whiz. We adore spicy banana peppers as a topping. Serve with sweet potato fries and coleslaw. Save 100 calories per serving by omitting the buns!

Recipe Ingredients for Philly Cheese Steak

2 tsp extra-virgin olive oil
1 medium onion, sliced
1 red or green bell pepper, sliced
2 tsp dried oregano
1/2 tsp fresh ground pepper
1 lb sirloin steak, trimmed and thinly sliced
1/4 tsp salt
1 tbsp all-purpose flour
1/2 cup sliced banana peppers
1/4 cup reduced-sodium chicken broth
3 oz provolone cheese (about 3 slices)
8 slices wheat bread (use buns - split and toasted)

Recipe Directions for Philly Cheese Steak

  1. Heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add onion and cook, stirring often, until soft and beginning to brow, (2-3 minutes).

  2. Add bell pepper, oregano and pepper and cook, stirring often, until the vegetables are wilted and soft (about 7 minutes).

  3. Add steak and salt and cook, stirring, until the meat is JUST cooked through (4 minutes).

  4. Reduce heat to low. Sprinkle the vegetables and meat with flour; stir to coat.

  5. Stir in banana peppers and broth; bring to a simmer.

  6. Remove from the heat; lay cheese slices on top of the vegetables and meat, cover and let stand until melted (1-2 minutes).
