The great Michigan UP tradition, meat and root veggies wrapped in a crispy crust. The perfect cold weather comfort food.

Recipe Ingredients for Pasty

1 chicken bouillon cube
1/2 cup water
5 1/2 cup potato
2 medium carrot
1 medium onion
1/2 cup rutabaga
680.39 gram ground beef
1 tsp black pepper
1 1/2 tsp salt
4 1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 cup shortening
1 1/3 cup water

Recipe Directions for Pasty

  1. Lightly mix flour, 1 tsp salt, shortening, and 1 1/3 c. water until it just holds together. Separate into 6 balls and set aside.

  2. Chop potatoes, onions, carrots, and rutabagas into approx. 1/2 cubes. Mix in ground beef and bouillon cube dissolved in 1/2 cup hot water.

  3. Roll each ball of dough into a round and fill with 1 1/2 cup of mixture. Crimp the sides and slit vents in the top of crust.

  4. Bake for 45-50 min at 425 F.

  5. These freeze very well after baking. Thaw completely and bake at 425 for 30 min, or microwave on high for 2-5 min (depending on size)
