A very mild dal - if you like it hotter, add four choipped chilies to the recipe with the tomatoes. Also, the pulses should be a different mix: 175g yellow split, 90g split white gram, 45g split yellow mung. But caloriecount did not have those, so I just took split yellow! The red remain the same.

Recipe Ingredients for Panch Ratan Dal (Punjab Five-Jewel Creamed Lentils)

310 g yellow split peas
45 g red lentils
1/2 tsp turmeric
2 tsp salt,
3 tbsp vegetable oil
2 medium onions, thinly sliced
2 tsp garlic, minced
2 tsp ginger, grated
3 medium tomatoes
1 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp paprika
4 tbsp coriander, chopped

Recipe Directions for Panch Ratan Dal (Punjab Five-Jewel Creamed Lentils)

  1. Boil the carefully washed and picked-over lentil with the turmeric in 1l water until a porridge. Salt to taste and keep at a simmer.

  2. At the same time, fry the onions in 2 tbsp oil until browning, about 15 minutes. Add the garlic and ginger, cook 2 more minutes, add the tomatoes, turn up the heat and fry until cooked, about 5 minutes more. Pour contents of the pan into the lentil porridge.

  3. In the remaining 1 tbsp oil, fry the cumin until dark brown. Add the cayenne and paprika, stir once, and immediately pour into the dal; stir.

  4. Serve sprinkled with coriander and more paprika.
