Recipe Ingredients for Orange Rolls

2 cups flour
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp baking soda
1 tablespoon sugar
1 tsp orange peel
1/4 cup vegetable oil
3/4 cup milk
1 tsp vinegar
4 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons orange marmalade
2 tsp orange peel
1/8 cup brown sugar
2 tablespoons butter
3 tablespoons orange marmalade
2 tsp orange peel
1 tsp lemon juice
1/3 cup powdered sugar
1 tablespoon milk

Recipe Directions for Orange Rolls

  1. Combine 1 tsp vinegar with 3/4 cup milk and let sit at room temperature for 10 minutes to make sour milk.

  2. For the dough: Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda, 1 Tbs sugar, and 1 tsp orange peel in a large bowl and stir to combine. Add the vegetable oil and 3/4 cup milk and stir until just combined. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead briefly until smooth (do not overwork.) With a rolling pin, roll the dough out into roughly a 15x8" rectangle.

  3. For the filling: In a small bowl, combine 4 Tbs butter (softened), 2 Tbs marmalade, 2 tsp orange peel, and 1/4 cup brown sugar to form a paste. Spread the filling mixture over the rolled out dough, leaving about 1/2" border around the edges.

  4. Roll the dough up, jelly roll style, starting from the long side. Cut the dough into about 1.5 to 2" slices. Place the slices in a prepared baking dish or cupcake tin and bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes.

  5. For the frosting: While the roll are baking, melt 2 tablespoons butter together with 3 tablespoons marmalade. Add the 2 tsp orange peel, 1 tsp lemon juice, powdered sugar, and milk. You may need more or less powdered sugar and milk depending on what kind of consistency you like. Mix together to form a frosting.

  6. When rolls are done baking, remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes. Drizzle with frosting and serve warm. Makes 12 large rolls.
