Recipe Ingredients for Old-Fashioned Cocoa Frosting

10 tablespoons unsalted butter (1 1/4 sticks), room temperature
5 cups powdered sugar, divided
8 tablespoons milk, divided
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

Recipe Directions for Old-Fashioned Cocoa Frosting

  1. Beat butter in large bowl until light and fluffy. Gradually beat in about half of the sugar.

  2. Beat in most of the milk and vanilla.

  3. Add cocoa and remaining sugar; beat until blended, thinning with more milk if necessary.

  4. To frost, place 1 cake layer, chocolate chips up, on a platter. Spread a thin layer of frosting over. Top with second cake layer, chips side up. Spread with another thin laer of frosting. Top with remaining cake layer, chips side down. Spread remaining frosting over top and sides of cake.
