Recipe Ingredients for Oatmeal & Molasses bread

1 1/4 cup rolled oats
1/2 cup granola (red river cereal)
1/4 cup sunflower seeds
1/4 cup raisins
1/4 cup margarine
1/2 cup molasses
2 tsp salt
4 cups boiling water
1/2 cup milk (scalded)
1 egg (beaten)
1 tsp sugar
2 1/2 tsp yeast
1/4 cup water
6 cups flour

Recipe Directions for Oatmeal & Molasses bread

  1. Mix first seven ingredients together in a large bowl. Pour Boiling water over and mix. Add hot milk and beaten egg. Stir. Allow to cool to room temperature.

  2. Meanwhile, proof yeast in second amount of water with sugar. Water should be about body temp, slightly warmer then room temp. Should take 10-15 minutes about which time the oat mixture will have cooled enough to work with.

  3. Add yeast to oat mixture and mix thoroughly. Add about half the flour all at once, then gradually add remaining flour. Stir vigorously for several minutes. Should resemble a very thick and sticky pancake bater. Cover and allow to rise in a warm room for about 1 hour 15 minutes.

  4. Dough will be too wet/sticky to punch down so attempt to stir it again, work out the bubbles with your spoon scooping batter over itself. Divide between loaf pans, cover and allow to rise one hour.

  5. Preheat oven to 375 F. Bake for about 40 minutes. Turn loaves out onto wire rack to cool before wrapping.

  6. Yield: 3 loves of about 16 slices each.
