A traditional Scottish dish, AKA Turnips & Potatoes outside Scotland. It is typically served with haggis, which is of course entirely optional! Substituting turnips for half the potatoes results in a nice change of pace from regular mashed potatoes, and it also decreases calories per serving from about 120 to less than 100. Bonus dish: Adding the optional chives and onion transforms "Neeps & Tatties" into "Clapshot".

Recipe Ingredients for Neeps & Tatties

1 lb potato
1 lb turnips
1 tablespoon butter or margarine
1 tsp salt
1 tsp pepper

Optional ingredients:
1 tablespoon chives, chopped
1 medium onion, chopped

Recipe Directions for Neeps & Tatties

  1. Cook potatoes and turnips separately until tender. Drain and then mash together, adding all the other ingredients.

  2. Season to taste and serve very hot.
