A soup that my Nanny (Southern for "grandma") makes for us in the winter. Not very healthy at all, but VERY good!

Recipe Ingredients for Nanny's Spanish Bean Soup

8 cup Chick Peas
4 link, 4/lb Sausage, Italian, Pork, Cooked
2 medium (2-1/4" to 3-1/4" dia.) Potatoes, Boiled
4 oz Sauteed Onions
2 tsp Salt, Table

Recipe Directions for Nanny's Spanish Bean Soup

  1. You will also have to use some type of flavoring meat, like a ham hock or two, some SMOKED hog jowl, or even smoked bacon.

  2. If using ham hocks, boil in water for about 30 minutes.

  3. In the soup pot, sauté onion, paprika and garlic (if using smoked bacon or hog jowl, sauté with the onion, paprika and garlic). Cut link sausage in "nickels", sauté in frying pan. Add to soup pot along with diced potatoes. Put about half of the garbanzo beans in food processor or blender and pulse until beans are crushed. Add all beans and the liquid they were packed in into the soup pot. If using hocks, then add some of the water that it was boiled in and the hock(s) into soup pot to make it more liquid and add the hock flavor. (If using sautéed jowl, then you?ll have to add some water to it. Add as much as needed). Add salt and pepper. Put a little yellow food coloring in soup to enhance the appearance of soup. Simmer until potatoes are done.
