A whole-wheat / white mix that is great for sandwiches or eating with a meal.

Recipe Ingredients for Nanny's Bread Recipe

2 1/2 cups water
3 tbsp yeast
2 tbsp sugar
1/2 cup sugar
2 1/2 tsp salt
3 tbsp oil
4 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
4 1/2 cups white flour

Recipe Directions for Nanny's Bread Recipe

  1. Pour the lukewarm water into the mixing bowl and add 2 tbsp of sugar and the yeast.

  2. After yeast is dissolved, add the remaining sugar, oil and salt.

  3. After all liquid ingredients are mixed add flour (starting with WW) until the dough leaves the side of the mixing bowl and is only slightly tacky. Continue to mix for 7 additional minutes.

  4. Cover the bowl and let the dough rise for 30 minutes.

  5. Punch dough down with mixer for a few seconds and then roll out into loaves. Place loaves in oven with light on until doubled in size. ~45-60 minutes

  6. Carefully remove the loaves from the oven and pre-heat to 400F. Bake on lowest rack for 5 min. then at 350F for 15 min or until dark brown.

  7. Yield: 3 loaves.
