Makes 5 servings

and indian flat bread, can also top it with nigella seeds, poppy seeds, sesame seeds, garlic and cilantro, pumpkin and/or sunflower seeds or leave it plain :)

Recipe Ingredients for Naan

1 3/4 c. all-purpose flour
2 tsp. sugar
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 c. milk
2 tbsp. vegetable oil
1 tbsp. butter, melted for brushing

Recipe Directions for Naan

  1. Sift together the flour, sugar, salt, and baking powder. Mix together the milk and oil. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients, and pour in the liquids.

  2. Slowly mix together the dough by working outward from the center and incorporating the flour from the edges of the well to make a smooth, soft dough. Knead well for 8-10 minutes, adding a little flour if the dough is too sticky.

  3. Place in an oiled bowl, cover with a damp dish towel, and leave for at least 1 hour in a warm place to rise. When risen, punch out and form into 5 balls.

  4. Preheat the broiler to its highest setting and put a heavy baking sheet on the upper shelf. (a baking stone works well also)

  5. Roll out the dough into teardrop or oval shapes, then gently prick all over with a fork. Sprinkle seed topping on and press into dough if desired. Place the naans onto the hot baking sheet and broil for 1-2 minutes or until there are brown spots on the surface. Brush with butter and serve hot.
