Sweet bread my mother made every Christmas season, handed down to my wife and now my children.

Recipe Ingredients for My Mother's Potica

3/4 oz yeast
1/2 cup water (luke warm)
2 cups milk (scalded)
2 tsp salt
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
2 eggs (well beaten)
8 cups flour
1 cup milk
1 lb ground walnuts
3 eggs
1/2 cup sugar
1 cup honey

Recipe Directions for My Mother's Potica

  1. Filling:

  2. When the bread is rising for the scond time, make the filling.

  3. You want it cool enough to spread without burning.

  4. For more filling only makd 1.5 of the filling (2 x is too much).

  5. Scald the milk in a heavy skillet.

  6. Add nuts and bring to a boil stirring all the time.

  7. Beat in eggs one at a time.

  8. Combine sugar and honey and add gradually to the nut mixture, stirring continuously.

  9. Cook over a low heat for 5 minutes.

  10. Let cool

  11. Soak yeast in warm water and set aside.

  12. scald the milk and add the salt, sugar and butter

  13. when mixture cools, add eggs, yeast and water

  14. mix in flow slowly. Add 6 cup and knead in the last 2.

  15. Knead for 15 to 20 minutes

  16. Place in a warm place and let rise twice.

  17. after second rising, roll and pull dough out on a large table covered with a floured bed sheet.

  18. when the dough hangs over the sides, spread walnut toping all over and roll from one end of the table.

  19. Let rolled dough rise again and cook at 350 for 45 minutes to an hour
