My Complete Lifestyle Change

By Sheila on Jan 09, 2012 10:00 AM in Success Stories

Congratulations on your pregnancy!  Those are very happy words to expectant Moms.  However, for Jrlaronde those words brought her to tears.  Realizing that she had to lose weight, she completely changed her lifestyle.  She quit smoking, started to eat right and along with a strict workout routine lost 45lbs.

She contacted us through our Share Your Story feature and provided the following answers to our questionnaire.

1. What prompted you to begin this weight loss journey? Did you have an "Aha!" moment?

Well to put it very simply, I got fed up with being asked when my baby was due. It was almost a weekly occurrence, and inevitably always brought me to tears. Eventually I just started saying that I wasn't pregnant and that I was just getting fat.

2. What other "diets" (programs, products, plans, or services) had you tried in the past?

I have never tried any other diets, although I did look into U-Weight Loss once, but when I was told it would cost me $1000+, it just seemed to me that I could put that money into myself in some other, better way. I tried going to a gym before on my own, and saw no changes at all.

3. Please describe how you reached your weight loss goal. What changes did you make to your usual diet, activity, lifestyle, and attitude?  Did you implement any other strategies besides Calorie Count?  What was the most important change?

For me it was a complete lifestyle change. I stopped smoking, started eating right, and exercised...a lot. The way I see it, they all mesh together. I hired a personal trainer to help me get started at the gym, so I would see results this time, and did a workout video in my living room on my non gym days. I learned that I could push myself harder than I thought, feel like I was going to throw up, and that a heart beating right out of my chest wasn't going to kill me, but make me stronger.

4. Please describe how Calorie Count was instrumental to your weight loss.

Calorie Count was extremely instrumental. It kept me accountable for everything I put in my mouth, and how many calories I was burning. It made me feel really good to see a deficit in calories! It also helped me balance my calories throughout the day. I learned that metabolism is like a fire, you have to keep it stoked to keep it burning!

5. What difficulties did you experience losing weight?

To be honest, once I made up my mind about what I wanted out of my life, it became easy. It fell into place, which I was not expecting at all. I just kept doing what I knew I had to do, and the weight loss was consistent, 1-2 pounds a week. I think a big part of it was getting my metabolism to work the way it should.

6. How long did it take you to see results? When did you realize that you were a success?

Within a month I could see changes on the scale, then my pants didn't fit, again and again. When I realized I had lost my dog in weight, (20 lb wiener dog) that put something physical in front of me other than the scale, and made me feel very proud of how much I had accomplished.

7. How do you prevent relapse?

I feel that it is a fine line between keeping what I have now, and falling back to where I was. What it comes down to, is keeping mindful of what I eat, especially portions! Also, the need to continue to exercise. I fell in love with running, which was a huge surprise. It's great though because it is my stress reliever, and keeps my metabolism revved up.

8. How has your life changed now that you've lost weight?

I love shopping now for one. Clothes actually fit comfortably! The biggest thing though is that I carry myself with much more confidence, and haven't heard any questions about when my baby is due!

9. How long have you maintained your current weight?

It has been about 3 or 4 months.

10. What five tips do you have for other dieters?

  • Don't diet!
  • Live a well balanced life.
  • Don't completely deprive yourself.
  • Know you can do absolutely anything!
  • Finally, LOVE YOURSELF!

You look great! Congratulations on your accomplishments!

Congratulations on your success! You look great and your attitude is spot on for keeping yourself on the right path. I admire you for quitting smoking, too. That is something I didn't do until I had lost 60 lbs., but I am so glad that I did. Your beautiful smile tells the story...wonderful!

Awesome work!! Your story is very inspiring! Laughing

Congratulations.  You are inspiring!  Thanks so much for taking the time to tell us your story!

You look fantastic AND 15 years younger!  Great job!

CONGRATULATIONS!!  This story really hit home with me!  I too was asked over the span of several months, when my baby was due, I was 51 at the time and at first very flattered that they thought I was young enough to have a baby, LOL!  Unfortunately, after the 11th stranger asked me my due date, I was so embarrassed, I decided to loose the weight.  It's been a long road, I started April 29, 2011, when I saw Kate Middleton's mother in a GORGEOUS outfit that I had to have for my daughter's wedding (not that she's even engaged) and told her she could NOT get married until I lost weight.  So far, I have lost 46 pounds, I still need to loose 10 pounds to reach my goal weight, but, I'm giving myself until June to lose that, it is VERY doable :)  My friends can't get over how good I look, they ask me how I did it, I tell them I'm on the Nancy diet, I count every calorie and I read forums to stay on track and get encouragement!  They are very impressed, some of them have even started using my methods too :)  Anway, enough about me, YOU LOOK FABULOUS!!  But, then you already know that :)  Congrats again :)

Hey there, you look amazing, and I bet you feel SO much better about yourself too?

How humiliating, to be asked when your due date is? But I once heard someone say, we don't change until it gets so painful it's easier to change than to stay the same....

You've done an amazing job and I'm inspired. I need inspiration having "slipped" a bit from my path, stopped logging in here every day for the last 6 months, and re-gained 7 of the 21lb I'd previously lost.

So now I have another 21lb to lose, but it's ok because your story has inspired me sufficiently to get back on track, and get logging in!

you're right in that, once you get started, you know what to do...(just in my case, a case of resisting friends with sweets who say "you look fine as you are")...I'll know when I look good, and it'll be when my clothes fit properly and I feel firm and fit longer just about shape, but fitness and lifestyle are SO key.

Thanks and congratulations!

Congratulations!  This is exactly the motivation I needed to start my 2nd week of getting my life back!  Best of luck to keep it up!

You do look fantastic :) If you don't mind me asking, what was your start weight?

Thank you everyone!  I know that other peoples success stories really motivated me to keep going.  It always helps knowing you're not alone I think.  ashnstuff, my start weight was 165lbs, and I'm now 120lbs.

Congratulations! You look great.

Job well done the right wayand with the right mindset which will make your maintenance a success too. You look M-A-R-V-E-L-O-U-S!

Congrats.....keep up the good work.

Awesome! This is very inspiring! Congratulations! :-) ~~~

Super diet secrete: Carefully floss and brush your teeth at 8 at night. You will train your body and brain that there is no more food until breakfast. This works! I can be hungry, but after flossing and brushing, my hunger has gone way down.

Congratulations! What an inspiration you are!  Something about hearing you say you lost your dog in weight and feeling like you were going to throw up when exercising struck a chord.  I have been up and down in my weight over the holidays and about to throw in the towel.  Well, I laughed at your comments and for the first time in months, actually logged in to check out my status.  Think I might even start keeping my food log again. Thanks so much for your honest, and funny story.  When do you start your motivational speaking tour? :)

Go back and read my post about the greatest weight loss secret:

Carefully foss and brush your teeth at 8 PM, and that's the end of eating until breakfast. This works! The act of cleaning your teeth will cause your hunger to drop dramatically.

Also, those who take care of their teeth have a much lower rate of heart disease than those who don't.

TEST: If you brush in the morning, your teeth should feel slick and clean at night. If not, you have been eating too much sugar in all its ugly forms.

Thanks for sharing your inspiring story. You look amazing and 20 years younger to boot! Isn't it amazing how moderation and common sense always seem to rule in the end?

What an inspiration you are!!!

Congratulations!  You've done a great job getting healthy and you look 15 years younger.  I'm not joking.

You look great! I've never understood people that think its okay to ask someone who they aren't absolutely sure is pregnant when their baby is due but at least you turned it into positive motivation!

I appreciate the comments of looking younger, however that makes me a teenager again!  In which I never want to be again...but I'll take it lol!  (I'm 32) I had no idea how much influence I had on peoples lives, and to hear from so many that I am an inspiration, it brings tears to my eyes.  I feel honored!  Thank you everyone for all your wonderful comments! And rogercarrier, you are right, I have done that as well and it works like a charm.  No one ever wants to eat again after they've cleaned their teeth.

Wow!  What a success - to see you so slim and trim and you did it with some very deep stickability and help from people who really care.  You are the greatest and this helps me know what an effort it really is to do what seemed so impossible when we started and yet is so gratifying to attain.  We have a lot to be thankful for and I thank you:)  aea
