a sweet, wholesome, slightly heavy bread. Great for winter soups, or anytime.

Recipe Ingredients for Molasses Oat Bread

2 eggs
1 tsp salt
6 cups whole grain flour
1 cup water
2 cups steel cut oats
1/2 cup milk
2 tbsp yeast
1/2 cup molasses
1/2 cup butter

Recipe Directions for Molasses Oat Bread

  1. Combine in a large mixing bowl 4 1/2 cups flour, oats, salt and yeast.

  2. Combine water, milk, molasses and margarine in a saucepan and heat then let cool.

  3. With mixer on medium gradually add liquids to flour mixture and beat for 2 minutes.

  4. Add eggs and 3/4 cup flour then beat for 2 minutes.

  5. Stir in enough additional flour to make soft dough.

  6. Turn out and knead for 10 minutes then place in greased bowl turning to grease top.

  7. Cover and let rise for 1 hour.

  8. Punch down and turn out onto lightly floured surface then divide into 4 equal parts.

  9. Take 2 sections and role into 12 inch ropes then twist them together and turn the ends under and place in 8 x 5 inch loaf pan.

  10. Repeat for remaining bread.

  11. Cover loaf pans and let rise 1 hour.

  12. Bake the Molasses Oatmeal Bread at 400 for about 30minutes. Toothpick should come out clean.

  13. Put it out on a cooling rack until it's had the chance to dry out a bit.
