Makes 4 servings

Brown rice dish - Does NOT keep exceptionally well in the fridge because of the red cabbage.

Recipe Ingredients for Marti Gras Rice

2 cups brown rice
1 tsp iodized salt
1 tsp Sugar
1 tsp soy sauce
1 tsp Mirin
1 tsp lemon juice
1 tsp dried garlic
1 tablespoon dried onion flakes
1 serrano pepper
3/4 cup boiled carrots
3/4 cup raw shredded red cabbage
2 tsp barbecue sauce

Recipe Directions for Marti Gras Rice

  1. Veggie Prep: dice raw carrots, mince the serrano pepper and chop the red cabbage (even if you buy pre-shredded, you'll still want to chop it up into more mouth-size-friendly pieces).

  2. Rice can take a while to cook, depending on variety, so preserve the chopped cabbage in the fridge.

  3. Throw everything except the red cabbage and the barbecue sauce into the same pot and cook according to the instructions on the rice.

  4. Fluff the rice, letting some of that steam escape, then stir in the barbecue sauce and (raw) red cabbage.

  5. *Note: Cabbage is temperamental. It gets wilted and smelly if you cook it too long. We add it last because the heat of the freshly cooked rice is plenty enough to cook the cabbage without losing its crunch.
