Recipe Ingredients for Macaroni Loaf (Pain de Macaronis - ?I know how to cook?)

1 1/4 tablespoons butter, plus extra for greasing
3 cups macaroni
6 eggs, separated
3 1/2 ounces mixed gruyere & parmesan cheese, grated
5 ounces ham, chopped
9 ounces mushrooms, sliced
1 salt to taste
1 pepper to taste
1 freshly grated nutmeg to taste
1/2 cup creme fraiche

Recipe Directions for Macaroni Loaf (Pain de Macaronis - ?I know how to cook?)

Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F and grease a charlotte mold or other domed mold with butter. Bring a large pan of salted water to a boil, add the macaroni & boil for 8-10 minutes, or until al dente. Drain & stir in the egg yolks, cheese, ham and half the mushrooms. Season with salt and pepper. In a large bolw, beat the egg whites to stiff peaks, and fold them into the macaroni mixture. pour the macaroni mixture into the prepared hold and place in a roasting pan half-filled with hot water. Bake for 1 hours. Meanwhile, prepare the sauce. Melt the butter in a medium pan and pan-fry the remaining mushrooms for 10 minutes. Season with salt, pepper and nutmeg, then stir in the creme fraiche. Turn out the macaroni loaf and pour the sauce over it to serve.
