This is one of my favorite recipes from my secondary school Home Ec class. It's super easy and tastes great! They're at hit at parties and I always get requests for these.

Recipe Ingredients for Low-Fat Cinnamon Pinwheels

250 ml all purpose flour
10 ml baking powder
2 ml salt
15 ml sugar
30 ml margarine
125 ml milk
15 ml margarine
30 ml brown sugar
30 ml chopped nuts or raisins (optional)
2 ml cinnamon

Recipe Directions for Low-Fat Cinnamon Pinwheels

  1. Preheat over to 400 degrees farenheit. Stagger oven racks in the middle of the oven.

  2. In a medium bowl, sift flour with salt, baking powder, and sugar.

  3. Cut margarine into the dry ingredients with a pastry blender until it resembles coarse oatmeal. Set aside.

  4. Melt cream cheese in a custard cup by microwaving it at high for about 45 seconds.Add the brown sugar & cinnamon to the melted margarine and mix together with a spoon. Set aside.

  5. Make a well in the dry ingredients and gradually add enough milk while stirring with a fork until a soft dough is formed & leaves the sides of the bowl.

  6. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead 6-8 times until the dough is smooth. Roll from center to outside into a rectangle about 1.0 cm thick. Spread the brown sugar mixture onto the dough but not to the edge. Sprinkle on raisins or chopped nuts (optional).

  7. Firmly roll the dough up like a jelly roll & pinch the edge tightly together to hold the filling.

  8. Cut the roll into 2 cm or 3/4" thick slices with a piece of thread by placing the thread under the roll & crossing the thread ends over the top while pulling in opposite directions. This will keep the slices round in shape. A knife would flatten the roll out.

  9. Place on a non-stick baking sheet about 2 cm apart. Bake for about 10-15 minutes or until a light golden brown colour. Remove and place on a cooling rack.
