Why do I get leg cramps at night?

Sometimes I wake up with a cramp in my calf.  What causes that?


Nighttime leg cramps have several possible causes, including muscle overexertion, dehydration, low blood potassium, prolonged sitting, and pregnancy.  To prevent leg cramps, do leg stretches, stay well hydrated and eat high potassium foods.  Read more about leg cramps from the Guide to Orthopedics on
