What kind of exercise is good for the stomach?

To develop your abs, you need to work all of the abdominal muscles: the rectus abdominis, the external obliques, the internal obliques, and five others.  Standard crunches just don't work them all.  See the full set of ab exercises from the Guide to Sports Medicine at They include the plank, the bicycle crunch, the captain's chair, and others that may be familiar to you.  Of course, if your abs are covered by a thick layer of fat, your well-developed muscles will not show through.  To lose the fat, lower your calorie intake and get more cardio exercise and have a goal of general weight loss.
