This is wonderful Sour Dough Bread as it is not as sour as most. I don't have a recipe for the starter but have seen one in different books. It is best to get it from a friend. You add 3/4 c. sugar, 3 T. potato flakes and 1 c. warm water to it each week and allow it to grow for about 8-12 hours before you us it.

Recipe Ingredients for Karen's Sour Dough Bread

1 T. salt
1/2 c. sugar
1/2 c. canola oil
6 c. bread flour

Recipe Directions for Karen's Sour Dough Bread

  1. Remove 1 cup of starter and put in a large bowl. Put the jar of started back in the refrigerator.

  2. Add 1 1/2 c. warm water, salt, 1/3 c. sugar, oil, and 1 cup of flour. Note: I used the 1/2 c. of sugar in the ingredients because the starter uses sugar and I wanted a more accurate calorie count. Stir together.

  3. Continue adding flour 1 cup at a time. Use a spoon, then your hand or a kitchenaid mixer.

  4. Grease a large bowl, add dough and turn over so the oily side is up. Cover and let stand 8-12 hours.

  5. Punch down and knead a little. Divide into two loaves and let rise about 4-8 hours until double.

  6. Bake at 350 F for about 30 minutes. Rub the top of the loaf with butter when it comes out of the oven, remove from pan and allow to cool on a cooling rack.
