Made in bread machine, baked in oven. Makes 2 loaves

Recipe Ingredients for Italian Bread

4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tbsp light brown sugar
1 1/3 cups warm water
1 1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 tsp olive oil
1/4 ounce yeast

Recipe Directions for Italian Bread

  1. Put ingredients into bread machine following manufacturer's directions. Select dough cycle.

  2. Once bread has finished cycling, deflate dough, and form into 2 equal loaves. Place loaves, seam side down, on baking sheet sprinkled w/ corn meal. Cover w/ damp towel, allow to rise for 40-50 mins.

  3. Brush risen dough with egg wash made from one egg and 1 tbsp water. Using a sharp knife, make one long slice down each loaf (end to end). Bake 30-35 mins until loaves sound hollow when tapped.
