Full of childhood memories of St. Patrick's day, this bread is a classic recipe and full of sweet and salty flavor.

Recipe Ingredients for Irish Soda Bread

5 cup Wheat Flour, White, All-purpose, Enriched, Unbleached
8 tablespoon Unsalted Butter
3 cup, packed Raisins, Seedless
3 tbsp Caraway Seed
1 cup Sugars, Granulated
3 tsp Baking Powder
1 tsp Baking Soda
1.5 tsp Salt, Table
2.5 cup Reduced Fat Buttermilk
1 large Egg, Whole

Recipe Directions for Irish Soda Bread

Pre-heat oven to 350. Butter a heavy duty oven-safe 2in deep iron skillet. Mix together the dry ingredients (flour, salt, baking soda, baking powder, sugar). Add the butter at room temperature and knead until the dry ingredients are well combined and have a crumb-like appearance. Add the raisins and caraway seeds and combine. Whisk the egg and the buttermilk together in a separate bowl then incorporate into the dry ingredients . Add the dough to the skillet and form a rounded mound. Cut a cross into the top with a knife, then bake over one hour until a tooth pick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Rest the bread in the skillet for ten minutes, then turn out onto a platter to finish cooling. Can be made a day in advance.
