A spicy dal powder very popular in South India as a side dish for idlis and dosas, and known as "Gun-powder" in north india since it is very hot. It is served with oil.

Recipe Ingredients for Idli Powder

1 oz. chickpeas, dried
1 oz. black beans, dried
10 red peppers, dried
1 tsp oil

Recipe Directions for Idli Powder

  1. heat oil in a wok.

  2. add the chickpeas and par-fry.

  3. then add the black beans and chillies.

  4. fry till both beans turn golden brown.

  5. cool.

  6. grind coarse, without adding water.

  7. store in an airtight container.

  8. this powder if refridgerated can stay fresh for several months.
