I used skim milk and half the cheese to reduce a few calories, but it is still delicious.

Recipe Ingredients for Humble Shepherd Pie (Slightly Modified)

1 1/2 lbs red potatoes, peeled and sliced
6 tablespoons margarine, cut into pieces
1 cup skim milk
1 tbsp ground black pepper
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 lb ground turkey
1 medium onion, chopped
2 ounces brown gravy mix (2x 1 oz packages of instant gravy mix, chicken/turkey/brown will do fine)
1 cup water
8 ounce peas
8 ounce carrots (for peas and carrots use one 16 oz bag of frozen peas and carrots mix)
1 cups shredded cheese, of your choice
1 tbsp garlic powder
1/2 tbsp ground black pepper

Recipe Directions for Humble Shepherd Pie (Slightly Modified)

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

  2. Lightly grease a medium baking dish.

  3. Cover potatoes with water in a saucepan and boil for 20 to 30 minutes, or until fork-tender.

  4. Drain and beat until smooth with an electric mixer.

  5. Add butter, milk, and pepper and garlic for taste (and salt if you desire); beat to desired consistency.

  6. Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium high heat.

  7. Cook and stir turkey and onion until turkey is fully cooked.

  8. Add gravy mix and water; stir often, until gravy is thick and bubbly.

  9. Season with salt and pepper.

  10. Add turkey mixture to the baking dish.

  11. Next, layer the peas and carrots, and top with the mashed potatoes.

  12. Top with a layer of grated cheese.

  13. Bake in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, or until cheese is melted and the dish is heated through.
