Recipe Ingredients for Hot Water Gingerbread

1/2 cup shortening
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg, well-beaten
1 cup molasses
2 1/2 cups flour
1 1/2 t baking soda
1/2 t powdered cloves
1 t cinnamon
1 t ginger
1/2 t salt
1 cup water, hot

Recipe Directions for Hot Water Gingerbread

  1. Work shortening with a spoon until fluffy and creamy

  2. Add sugar gradually while continuing to work with a spoon until light

  3. Add the beaten egg and molasses

  4. Add the sifted dry ingredients and the hot water alternately in thirds, beating well with a spoon after each addition.

  5. Bake in greassed and floured cake pan about 9" x 9" x 2" at 350F for 50-55 minutes or until done
