I make these into rolls for sliders or loaves for sandwiches.

Recipe Ingredients for Honey Wheat Bread (2 loaves, 36 svgs)

3 c water
2 T yeast
1/3 c honey
1 T salt
3 T butter
5 c white flour
3 1/2 c whole wheat flour

Recipe Directions for Honey Wheat Bread (2 loaves, 36 svgs)

  1. In a mixing bowl, add yeast and honey. Whisk warm water into mixture. (for yeast breads, I just use tap water that is warm to my touch. If it burns you, it will kill the yeast.) You can let this mixture sit (or bloom) for up to 15 minutes (it should be foamy), or if you don't have time to wait, continue on as long as you see a slight bubbling action in the bowl, the yeast is working.

  2. In a mixer (with a dough hook), with your yeast mixture in the bottom, start adding the remainder of the ingredients. I usually add the salt, butter, white flour until well blended, then add your whole wheat flour until dough comes together.

  3. Hint: If you have a Kitchenaid mixer, use setting 2 for ALL bread doughs. The dough should come off the side of the bowl and should not be sticky to the touch. If it is, add more flour (a sprinkle at a time!) until the dough comes to the hook and is no longer sticky. If you add too much, however, your bread willbe dry, so add the flour slowly.

  4. Generously oil a large bowl. Turn dough ball into the bowl and cover the dough with oil. Put a piece of saran wrap over the top side of the dough. Place a wet, warm washcloth over the saran wrap, then a dry dishtowel over the wet one to hold in a bit of wet heat. This helps the dough to rise. Set the bowl in a warm area with no drafts. Let it rise until doubled in size.

  5. Turn dough out onto clean counter (if the dough is a bit sticky, cover the surface LIGHTLY with a little flour to keep it from sticking), punch out the air. Cut the dough in half and form 2 loaves.

  6. Start preheating your oven to 350 degrees.

  7. Put into greased loaf pans. Spray top of loaves with cooking spray. I set mine on top of the stove (not the burners) to let it rise while I'm preheating the oven until loaves are doubled in size.

  8. Bake for 25-30 minutes. Loaves are done when you tap on the bottom of the loaf and it sounds hollow.

  9. Serve after cooling completely, if you can keep them away!
