This bread is just the basics. The vinegar makes it a little more like sour dough bread.

Recipe Ingredients for Homemade white bread

6 cups white flour for making bread
2 cups water
1 teaspoon vinegar
1 1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon yeast

Recipe Directions for Homemade white bread

  1. Add yeast and 2 tablespoons of white flour and mix with 1/4 cup of lukewarm water. Let rest until bubbly and doubled in size.

  2. Put remaining hard bread flour in a large bowl. Mix yeast mixture with remaining water and add to the flour in the large bowl. Mix well.

  3. Turn out onto well floured surface and knead for half a minute. Return to large bowl, cover with saran wrap and let rise in warm location until approximately doubled in size.

  4. Knead bread, divide in half and shape into two balls. Put on parchment paper and let rise 2 hours or until approximately doubled in size.

  5. Heat oven to 500. Heat in oven two oven safe large pots with lids.

  6. Spritz top of loaves with water. Put bread (leave on parchment paper) in pots and cover. Reduce heat to 450 and bake for 30 minutes.

  7. Reduce oven to 400 degrees, uncover and cook until well browned (approximately 15 more minutes).
