Betty Crocker White Bread Recipe with Revisions

Recipe Ingredients for Homemade Wheat Bread

2 cups skim milk
3/4 cup water
14 g Fleischmann's Active Dry Yeast
36 g All-Vegetable Shortening
3 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon salt
6 cups unbleached flour
1 cup whole wheat flour

Recipe Directions for Homemade Wheat Bread

  1. Scald 2 cups milk and set aside to cool to room temp.

  2. Dissolve 2 packets yeast in 3/4 cup warm water (about 105 degrees).

  3. Blend 3 tablespoons shortening, 1 tablespoon salt and 3 tablespoons sugar into yeast water.

  4. Add milk to yeast water.

  5. Add 1 cup whole wheat flour and mix until smooth.

  6. Continue adding two cups of white flour at a time until no longer mixes with blender. Continue to hand mix remainder and work with hands until doughy consistency that doesn't stick to hands.

  7. Flour counter surface. Knead dough for about 10 minutes until smooth, elastic dough.

  8. Place in greased bowl, cover and let rise 1 hour.

  9. Divide dough into three even pieces.

  10. Roll each piece into rectangle, flipping over and continue to roll with rolling pin until smooth. Use hands to roll from one end to the other as a jelly roll. Pinch ends and flip under. Butter surface of loaves. Place in greased bread pan, cover and let rise 1 hour.

  11. Bake 20-25 minutes at 425 degrees.

  12. Cool on baking rack.

  13. Slice each loaf into 16 slices.

  14. Agave nectar or honey can be added while adding sugar for a "honey wheat" flavor.
