Homemade Tamales which can easily be made with any meat filling, and with water to replace the chicken broth for a vegetarian or vegan meal

Recipe Ingredients for Homemade Tamales

3 potato (2-1/2" dia, sphere) Potatoes, Boiled, Cooked In Skin, Flesh
1 medium (approx 2-3/4" long, 2-1/2" dia) Peppers, Sweet, Green
1 medium (approx 2-3/4" long, 2-1/2" dia) Peppers, Sweet, Red
1 pepper, large (3-3/4" long, 3" dia) Peppers, Sweet, Yellow
1 medium Orange Hothouse Bell Pepper
2 medium Carrots
3/4 medium White Onion
3 clove Garlic
4 oz Mild Diced Green Chiles
1 tablespoon Soybean oil
1 tbsp Salt, Table
1 tsp Salt, Table
12 oz Instant Corn Masa Mix for Tamales
4 oz All Vegetable Shortening
3 cup Soup, Chicken Broth
1.5 Teaspoon Baking Powder

Recipe Directions for Homemade Tamales

  1. Prepare vegetables. Sautee in oil in large pan on medium heat. Add a little bit of water and cover until vegetables are cooked through. Let cool.

  2. Prepare masa according to package directions.

  3. Spread masa on corn husks, oiled tin foil or parchment paper leaving one inch on all sides of masa square. Fill masa sqaure with vegetable mixture. Bring sides of square together sealing the masa to itself. Roll up remainder of tamale and seal ends with corn husk, string, or other method.

  4. Place tamales in steaming basket and steam for 45-60 minutes.
