My favourite pizza. It's not particularly healthy but sometimes you have to treat yourself and by making it myself I know exactly what it is that I am putting in my stomach. Not to mention it's cheaper than ordering from a pizza place. This recipe is very basic, so feel free to add whatever extra topping you want. To save some calories, you can try turkey pepperoni instead of the usual pepperoni. Warning; high in sodium! I don't recommend to leave the salt out of the dough however, as I've found it makes the crust more crumbly and I don't personally like that. The pepperoni is the biggest sinner when it comes to high sodium anyway... So yeah, best way to keep the sodium lower would be to sacrifice the pepperoni, or maybe go hunting in grocery stores to see if there is a low sodium variety.

Recipe Ingredients for Homemade Pizza

2 1/2 tsp Leavening agents, yeast, baker's, active dry
1 cup (8 fl oz) Water
1 tsp Salt, Table
2 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil
2 cup Gold Medal All Purpose Flour
250 grams Lean Ground Beef
8 oz Tomato Sauce
1 tablespoon Oregano
2 tsp Garlic Powder
2 tsp Minced Onion
1 tsp Pepper, Black
250 grams Trader Joe's Lite Shredded Mozzarella
90 grams Market Pantry Pepperoni Slices

Recipe Directions for Homemade Pizza

  1. In a large bow, mix the dry yeast with lukewarm water, make sure that the yeast is completely dissolved. Add the salt, olive oil and 3/4 of the flour and knead it all together. Take the dough out of the bowl and add more flour while kneading the dough on the counter. The dough should be firm but still somewhat sticky.

  2. Rinse and dry the bowl and put a small dash of olive oil in it to coat the sides. Put in the lump of dough and swirl it around and coat it with the olive oil. Cover the bowl with cling film and let rise for about 1 hour at room temperature.

  3. When the dough is ready, set the oven on 400F (roughly 200C) and start on the sauce.

  4. Use a 3 qt saucepan, and brown the ground beef (cover pot with Pam cooking spray if pot isn't made of non-stick material)

  5. Add the minced dry onion, garlic powder, oregano and black pepper.

  6. When the meat is fully cooked, add the tomato sauce. Stir it all well together and let simmer on low heat.

  7. Give the sauce a taste to see if you would like more spices. Some like it spicier than others. If you find you put in too many spices, adding some milk helps make the sauce milder again.

  8. Roll out the dough and place on a large pizza pan, or cookie tray, coated with Pam spray.

  9. Roll up the sides of the dough.

  10. Pour the meat sauce over it and cover with mozzarella and then pepperoni. Add some oregano or Italian spice mix on top if you like.

  11. Put the pizza in the preheated oven and bake for about 20 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and has a nice golden colour.
