This is a classic recipe that is easy to make and uses common household ingredients. The flavor of the dish is greatly dependent on the kind of cheese used. For example, for a more pungent flavor use sharp cheddar instead of mild.

Recipe Ingredients for Homemade Macaroni & Cheese

2 cups macaroni
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup flour
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
2 cups milk
2 cups mild cheddar cheese

Recipe Directions for Homemade Macaroni & Cheese

  1. Cook macaroni according to package directions. Strain and set aside.

  2. Melt butter in a medium saucepan. Add flour and salt and pepper. Bring to a boil.

  3. Slowly add milk and bring to a boil. Drop heat to low and add cheese one cup at a time until melted.

  4. Remove from heat and add macaroni.
