Homemade Crusty french loaves instead of processed packaged bread. Takes 2 hours to prepare

Recipe Ingredients for Homemade French bread

4 cups flour
2 teaspoon yeast
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup warm water
1 tablespoon corn meal
1 egg white
1 tablespoon water

Recipe Directions for Homemade French bread

  1. Combine 2 cups flout, yeast, & salt

  2. Stir in warm water & beat to blended

  3. Add remaining flour, blend with knead hook until stiff

  4. Knead by hand 3-4 min until smooth and elasticy

  5. Place in greased bowl, covered, and in warm place to rise 30 min. Turn once, let set another 30min until doubled.

  6. Punch down and cut in half

  7. Roll each half into large rectangles

  8. Roll up each rectangle into loaf, seal with water, and taper ends.

  9. Set on greased pan sprinkled with corn meal (optional)

  10. Beat egg white with 1 Tablespoon Water

  11. Brush Top and sides of each loaf

  12. Cover with plastic or damp cloth

  13. Let rise 30-45 min - should double on pan

  14. Make 3-4 diagnal cuts ~ 1/4 inch deep on each loaf

  15. Bake in pre-heated oven at 375 degrees for 20 min.

  16. Brush again with egg white mixture

  17. Bake for an additional 15min.

  18. Cool on Rack
