You can make sure your croutons are low calorie and whole grain by making them yourself! My family always gets excited when they see I'm making my homemade croutons.

Recipe Ingredients for Homemade Croutons

82 grams lite whole wheat bread (four slices)
1 tbsp olive oil
1 tsp dried oregano
1 tsp dried thyme
1 tsp dried basil
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp black pepper

Recipe Directions for Homemade Croutons

  1. Preheat oven to 200 F.

  2. Cut the bread into cubes using a kitchen scissors, into a mixing bowl.

  3. Drizzle oil over cubes, then sprinkle with remaining ingredients.

  4. Mix cubes and seasonings by hand or with salad tongs.

  5. Spread croutons evenly over a baking sheet.

  6. Bake croutons for about 15 minutes, or until crunchy and lightly browned. Remember to keep checking! They will burn easily.

  7. Allow to cool and serve over your favorite soup or salad!

  8. Store in an airtight container or bag.
