This is reminiscent of the commercial brand of syrup you grew up on -- only better. The thin but flavorful sauce can be drizzled over ice cream, or used to make chocolate milk or real hot chocolate. Makes about 1-3/4 cups (From: The Best Ice Cream Maker Cookbook Ever by Peggy Fallon)

Recipe Ingredients for Homemade Chocolate Syrup

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder, preferably Dutch-process
1/8 tsp salt
1 cup water
1 tsp vanilla extract

Recipe Directions for Homemade Chocolate Syrup

  1. In a heavy medium saucepan, combine the sugar, cocoa powder, and salt. Gradually whisk in the water until smooth.

  2. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring, to dissolve the sugar. Continue cooking 3 minutes longer, stirring constantly. Remove from the heat and let cool. Stir in the vanilla. If made in advance, cover and refrigerate up to 1 week.
