You can use this dough to make either calzones or pizza. Obviously the toppings can be changed, this is just what I used this time!

Recipe Ingredients for Homemade Calzones/Pizza

2 tsp yeast
3/4 cup water
1 tbsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
1 1/2 cup bread flour
1/2 cup whole wheat flour
3 tbsp olive oil
1 cup white onion
1/2 cup green bell pepper
3/4 cup portobella mushroom
1 cup tomato sauce

Recipe Directions for Homemade Calzones/Pizza

  1. Microwave water for about a minute and a half (on my microwave) until the water has reached the temperature of 100 degrees. Add the yeast and sugar to it and stir. Set aside.

  2. Add all remaining ingredients to a bowl, and mix until just combined. Add yeast mixture and combine thoroughly. (This will probably take using your hands!)

  3. Knead dough for about 6 or 7 minutes until soft and pliable. Roll into a ball and lightly coat with olive oil. Place ball in a bowl, covered with a towel or plastic wrap, and allow to rise. A warm place works best.

  4. While you're waiting on the dough to rise, saute the vegetables with 1 Tbsp olive oil.

  5. Give the dough about an hour to rise. Preheat the oven (450 degrees) about 15 minutes before the dough is ready.

  6. Roll the dough out onto a cookie sheet or warmed pizza stone. Give the dough about 10 minutes or longer to fluff up a little bit more.

  7. Cover with toppings and bake pizza for about 8 minutes on 450 degrees to crisp the bottom of the pizza. Then turn the temperature down to 350 (add cheese if desired at this point) and allow to cook for another 10 minutes. Voila!
