Bread made with 1/2 whole wheat and 1/2 white flour

Recipe Ingredients for Homemade Bread

1 tsp yeast
1/8 cup sugar
1/4 cup canola oil
1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 1/2 cups white flour
1/2 tsp salt

Recipe Directions for Homemade Bread

  1. Activate yeast in 1 cup warm water with the sugar. Let sit until foamy, or about 10 minutes.

  2. Add oil, flours, and salt. Knead on a floured surface for 8-10 minutes, adding about a teaspoon of flour at a time as needed to reduce stickiness.

  3. Shape into a ball and put into a *lightly* oiled bowl. Turn dough to lightly coat with oil. Cover with a towel and let rise in a warm place until doubled in volume, or about 1 hour.

  4. Punch down the dough and knead again on floured surface, for 1-2 minutes. Shape into a rectangle, about 8 inches by 16 inches. Starting with the narrow end, roll dough into a loaf. Pinch the seams underneath and on the ends. Put the shaped dough into a lightly greased 9" bread pan. Cover with towel and let rise for another hour.

  5. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes, or until the dough sounds hollow when you tap with your finger.

  6. Let cool in the pan for a couple of minutes, then on a rack until completely cool. (If you cut into the loaf before it cools, it will fall somewhat.)
