Simple barbecue sauce, sweet profile with just a very subtle hint of fire underneath. Not spicy.

Recipe Ingredients for Homemade Basic BBQ Sauce

1 white onion
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1 1/2 tablespoons butter
1 cup ketchup
1/8 cup apple cider vinegar
1 1/2 teaspoons worcestershire sauce
1/4 teaspoon tabasco sauce
1/4 teaspoon chili powder
1 tablespoon honey
1/8 cup light brown sugar

Recipe Directions for Homemade Basic BBQ Sauce

  1. Dice the onion (however fine you please, we usually go with 1/4" chunks), and finely dice the garlic. Melt the butter in a pot, and saute the onion and garlic until translucent.

  2. Add the remaining ingredients; ketchup, vinegar, worcestershire, tabasco, chili powder, honey, and brown sugar. Stir to homogenize, and cook over low heat for 10-15 minutes while the flavor melds, and the sauce thickens.

  3. Ketchup is used for ease, and this sauce is very basic. You could just as easily substitute tomato puree or sauce as the base, you could drop the tabasco and/or honey, and/or you could add anything from fruit juice, to liquid smoke, molasses, raisins -- the point is it's hard to go wrong with BBQ sauce, go where your palette takes you.
