This recipe is not for the weak, or thin, at heart. This is my homemade apple pie.

Recipe Ingredients for Homemade Apple Pie

7 cups sliced apples
2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 cup sugar
1 tsp sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp nutmeg
2/3 cup shortening

Recipe Directions for Homemade Apple Pie

  1. Mix together the flour, salt and the teaspoons of sugar and cinammon. Then cut in the shortening until it looks like little powerdered balls.

  2. Add water to the mixture and mix with a fork. You sort of have to do this by adding a little water at a time. If you find the dough is too sticky, just add some more flour.

  3. Now is the time to turn your oven on. I set it at 375. This will give the oven time to heat up while you work.

  4. Turn over on a floured counter top and knead the dough until you have 1 ball. Split this into two balls so that you have a bottom and top crust. I usually make one ball a little bigger and use that for my bottom.

  5. Roll out your bottom crust and place in dish.

  6. Next, combine the apples, cup of sugar, 1 tsp of cinnamon, nutmeg and 3 tablespoons of flour. I usually use gala or macintosh apples because their softer. Mix them all together, and put them in the pie dish on your bottom crust.

  7. Roll out your 2nd dough ball, and then place that on time. If you have a hard time moving your pie crust, try to fold it into fourths. This will make it easier to move and fairly simple to unfold.

  8. Seal the edge of the pie crust by folding the top crust under the bottom and rolling. This will give you a raised edge.

  9. Cut at least four slits into the top so that the air can escape from the pie as it cooks.

  10. Next, place either a pie shield, or tin foil around the edge of your pie and place in the preheated oven for 25 minutes.

  11. When the first 25 minutes is over, remove the shield or tin foil and keep pie in oven for an additional 20 to 25 minutes.

  12. When done, take out and let cool for about 5 to 10 minutes and serve.
