Home made Chicken barley soup with carrots, onions and turnips, made from home made chicken stock

Recipe Ingredients for Home made Chicken Barley Soup

8 cups water
1 cup chicken, chopped
3 large carrots, diced
1 1/2 cup turnips
1 cup barley
2 large onions,chopped
2 tsp salt
2 tbsp molasses
1 tbsp parsley
1/2 tsp garlic powder

Recipe Directions for Home made Chicken Barley Soup

  1. Place chicken bones in water (with some meat left on) add 3 Bay Leaves, and boil for 1-3 hours.

  2. Strain bones from broth, leaving meat in broth, or add 1 cup diced chicken if not enough meat.

  3. Add onion and barley, bring back to a boil, and then simmer on low for 30 - 45 minutes.

  4. Add carrots, turnips, salt, and molasses and simmer 20-30 minutes longer.

  5. Add parsley and garlic powder and heat through.

  6. Add another cup of water if soup needs more broth.
