Old recipe. You can substitute 1/2 c. bacon fat for the shortening.

Recipe Ingredients for Hermits

3/4 c. shortening
1 c. sugar
1 egg
1/4 c. molasses
2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
2 1/4 c. flour
1 tsp cinnamon
3/4 tsp ginger
3/4 tsp clove
1/2 c. raisins

Recipe Directions for Hermits

Mix together. Wet hands and roll like sausage, 1" in diameter. Place on ungreased cookie sheet (BIG cookie sheet!) and squash. Sugar top. Bake 375 10 minutes or o until it cracks on top. Cool before cutting.
