Recipe Ingredients for Hearty Split Pea Soup

16 oz split peas
5 oz chunk ham
4 large potatoes
4 large onions
1 teaspoon cumin
1 teaspoon dry mustard
8 cloves garlic
2 bouillon cubes
6 cups water

Recipe Directions for Hearty Split Pea Soup

  1. Rinse split peas well to clean off any dirt remaining from processing

  2. Put peas in stock pot

  3. Cube potatoes and put in stock pot

  4. Chop onions and garlic and put in stock pot

  5. Grind whole cumin and mustard seeds and add to stock pot

  6. Add bouillon cubes and six cups water to stock pot

  7. Bring to a boil and cook on medium heat for 2 hours until peas are soft

  8. Flake and add canned ham to stock pot after peas of softened

  9. Simmer for 1 more hour on low heat for the flavors to blossom

  10. Best served with hot homemade corn bread
