Simple wheat bread recipe that includes oil for better preservation qualities. Still experimenting with the values - it's not sweet enough - you may want to skip this recipe for now.

Recipe Ingredients for Handmade Wheat Bread

1 cup white flour
2 1/2 cup wheat flour
1 1/2 tsp salt
1/4 cup olive oil
1 1/2 cup water
2 tsp yeast
1 tsp sugar

Recipe Directions for Handmade Wheat Bread

  1. Combine the white and wheat flour with the salt.

  2. Measure out 1 1/2 cup warm water (110). Mix in the yeast and sugar. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to allow the yeast to foam a little on the top. (This is called proofing the yeast. It makes sure the yeast is active.)

  3. Add the yeast mixture to about half of the flour and salt mixture. Add in the olive oil. Mix with a wooden spoon.

  4. Slowly add in the last half of flour, mixing until it becomes difficult to use a wooden spoon. NOTE: You may not have to add all of the flour - the less flour you add, the less crumbly your bread will be. (This is important to me, as I like to make sandwiches with this bread!)

  5. Knead the dough for about 5-10 minutes by hand and only add enough flour to keep it from being really sticky on your hands. The dough should be slightly wet to the touch.

  6. Coat a bowl and the dough ball with a little extra olive oil, cover the bowl with a damp cheese cloth (or towel) and then with a dry towel. Place it in a warm spot to rise for about an hour. (Allow it to double in size.)

  7. Gently punch it down and place it in an olive oil coated bread pan. Let dough rise a second time - just to the top of the pan. (about 15-20 minutes). Bake at 350 for 30 minutes or until browned.

  8. Let it cool for about 10 minutes before pulling it from the pan and cutting into it.

  9. Enjoy!

  10. To store, let it cool completely & place in a plastic bag in the refrigerator.
