Recipe Ingredients for Half Moon Pies with Apple Schnitz

4 c dried apples
3 c water
1/4 c sugar
1 t cinnamon
1 t salt
4 c flour
2 t salt
4 T shortening
1/4 c cold water

Recipe Directions for Half Moon Pies with Apple Schnitz

  1. Combine apples, water, sugar, cinnamon, and salt in slow cooker.

  2. Cover. Cook on Low 6 hours or on High 2-1/2 hours.

  3. Meanwhile, make the pie crust. Combine flour and salt. Cut in shortening until mixture resembles small peas.

  4. Add 1/4 c cold water to dough, adding more by tablespoonsful as needed to make a soft pie dough.

  5. Pinch off small pieces of dough, each about the size of a large walnut. Roll into round pieces, each about 8" in diameter.

  6. Jag one half of the circle a few times with a sharp fork to create holes for the steam to escape while baking.

  7. When the apple mixture is done cooking, remove it from the slow cooker. Mash until smooth with potato masher or put through food mill. Cool.

  8. Place a heaping tablespoon of Apple Schnitz filling on the non-perforated half of the dough. Fold one half of dough to make a shape like a half moon. Trim edges and crimp.

  9. Bake at 350 degrees for 30 minutes.
