Grandmother's Zserbo Recipe

A Hungarian dessert. Not actually sure how many servings it makes, but she cuts it into small squares, maybe 1.5"x1.5".

Recipe Ingredients for Grandmother's Zserbo


For dough:
10 g yeast
1/2 cup milk, warm
3 cups flour
1/2 tsp baking powder
1 egg
200 g butter
2 tbsp sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract

For filling:
400 g nuts
300 g sugar

For topping:
2 tbsp water
4 tbsp baking cocoa
6 tbsp sugar
100 g butter

Recipe Directions for Grandmother's Zserbo

  1. Dough:

  2. Mix yeast and milk and let sit for a few minutes.

  3. Mix flour and baking powder. Make wells and add remaining dough ingredients. Make a well in the middle, pour in yeast, and mix. Knead until smooth and elastic. Divide into 3 equal parts.

  4. Filling:

  5. Grind up nuts and sugar. Can mix in strawberry jelly for a variation.

  6. Topping:

  7. Heat cocoa, water, sugar over low heat & stir. Bring to boil, remove from heat, and add butter. Stir until it melts.

  8. Assembly:

  9. Roll out one third of the dough and place in baking pan. Spread evenly with nut mixture. Repeat with second third of dough.

  10. Roll out the third third of dough and place on top. Top with chocolate topping.

  11. Bake... but grandma gave no instructions on temp & time!

  12. Let cool and cut into small squares.
