A simple beef stew made of carrots, celery, potatoes and corn.

Recipe Ingredients for Grandma's Damn Stew

1 lb. stewing beef
2 carrots, chopped bite size
3 celery stalks (aka. branches), chopped bite size
2 medium potatoes, chopped bite size
1 cup canned corn, drained
3 garlic cloves, diced finely
1 onion, chopped bite size
1 tomato

Recipe Directions for Grandma's Damn Stew

  1. You will also need: seasoning salt, flour, meat tenderizer, black pepper and water.

  2. Rub seasoning salt and black pepper on the steak pieces. If the steak appears to be tough, add meat tenderizer also.

  3. After it has set for a while, (as short as 30 minutes, or as long as a day) sprinkle flour on the meat and toss so that each piece has flour, but is not coated thickly.

  4. Heat a pan with vegetable oil until it is very hot. Add the meat when the pan is at a high temperature to brown the meat quickly and lock in the juices and flavor. (The juices stay in the meat and not on the pan!)

  5. After the meat has browned on all sides (not too brown) turn the fire down and add the onion and garlic and stir.

  6. Cut the tomato in half, and using a grater, grind the tomato down into the pan, making a paste. Grind it down to the skin as best you can.

  7. Stir the meat and tomato paste. Add 2 cups water to the pan. Turn the fire down low and put a lid on it.

  8. Check every 10-15 minutes, adding water as it disappears so the meat does not dry out. The meal is done when the meat can be pulled apart by a fork. Tender meat could take about 20-30 minutes. Tough meat could take about 45-55 minutes.

  9. After the meat is fully cooked, thicken the stew as you desire with flour or corn starch. Serve with biscuits and enjoy!
