Recipe Ingredients for German-style rutabaga salad

1 lb. rutabaga, cut into 1/2" cubes
2 oz. bacon
2 T. lard
1/2 c. onion, chopped
1 T. whole-wheat flour
1/2 t. salt
1/2 t. celery seeds
1/2 t. dry mustard
1/4 t. black pepper
2/3 c. water
1/4 c. vinegar

Recipe Directions for German-style rutabaga salad

  1. Boil the rutabaga for 30 min. or until tender.

  2. Cook 4 slices bacon until crisp. Crumble and set aside.

  3. Saute the onion in the lard (or bacon grease) until translucent. Add flour, sugar, salt, celery seeds, dry mustard, and pepper. Stir in 2/3 c. water and vinegar. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly.

  4. Gently stir in rutabaga and bacon. Heat through.
